An open letter

One of our friends asked if we could post an open letter he wrote to Mayor Bloomberg, and we can never turn down our friends so here it is…

Mayor Bloomberg,

Today you took it upon yourself to use the horrible tragedy in Connecticut to try to argue for stricter gun control laws. The quote from Politics On The Hudson states:

“For every day we wait, 34 more people are murdered with guns,” Bloomberg’s statement continued. “Today, many of them were five-year olds. President Obama rightly sent his heartfelt condolences to the families in Newtown. But the country needs him to send a bill to Congress to fix this problem. Calling for ‘meaningful action’ is not enough. We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership – not from the White House and not from Congress. That must end today. This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response. My deepest sympathies are with the families of all those affected, and my determination to stop this madness is stronger than ever.”

Seeing as how you felt the need to ban large drinks in your city one can only imagine that this is your way of saying we need to ban guns altogether.  While your group Mayors Against illegal Guns says you believe in the second amendment that states:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

Mr. Mayor, let’s go over some stats shall we.

In 2010 32,885 people were killed in traffic accidents according to the NHTSA website. Should we ban cars?

According to the CDC  35.7% of US adults are obese. Shall we then boycott silverware?

According to the CDC every day 10 people die from unintentional drownings. Lets ban all swimming, baths, hot tubs and such.

The CDC also says that every day almost 30 people die in an automotive accident that involves a impaired driver. Time to ban Alcohol along with the cars.

Don’t say it’s apples to oranges. All of those kill people. Not a single one will change if the government regulates it and says that it is illegal. Owning guns does not kill people.

An article in Townhall.com states that in England where guns are banned, Gun Crimes are up 35% . How can that be if guns are banned.

Wait, what is that you say? They are criminals so they will get the guns anyway?  Bingo Give yourself a star and a pat on the back. You are starting to catch on.

Stricter Gun Control Laws do nothing to the criminal who obtained his guns illegally anyway. All it does is punish the law-abiding citizen who has followed all the rules up to this point. Also makes it easier for the government to take over ( but that’s a different story for a different article).

So Mr Bloomburg, before you and your cronies over at the Mayors Against Illegal Guns aka Ban All Guns run your mouth about more/stricter gun laws, remember not only do stricter laws hurt those of us that follow the rules, it’s also my right to keep and bear arms whether you like it or not. Stop trying to tell us how to live our lives and make laws governing how we can live.

Unfortunately, stricter gun laws and bans will not bring back those that have been killed by illegaly owned guns. If someone wants to harm you they will find a way, whether it be with a gun, ax, knife, rope, drowning, poisoning or so on they will. Stop over-reacting to a problem that is only in your head.

I feel horribly for anyone who has lost a friend, mother, father, child, any other family member to any type of violence. I could not fathom what they have and are going through, and i send out prayers to each and every one of them

Signed,

A law abiding Citizen
